“Our analysis reveals that . . . the political power of the speaker [Christine Quinn] and the reticence of council members to challenge it are inhibiting the advancement of human rights in New York City.”

Street Vendors Protest Steep Fines: “We Just Work To Pay Tickets Now”

“Street vendors have already received support from 36 of the 51 council members—all they need is a vote to lower the fines. For reasons unknown, Quinn has delayed the vote on this legislation, which vendors have been working nearly six years to rectify.”

Allon calls out Quinn’s support for carriage horse industry

“The current speaker of the City Council, Christine Quinn, has blocked the efforts to take these horses off the streets and out of harm’s way since a bill was introduced to ban the trade in 2007.”

The not-so-mighty Quinn_

Quinn “comically spent months nipping and nibbling on the bill to the point where just 400 to 500 low-wage workers in the city annually will be affected, by her own estimate.”

The not-so-mighty Quinn

Quinn “has inherited much of {Bloomberg’s] political apparatus, including some of the most skilled operatives in the city. And she gets equal billing in many mayoral announcements — whether it’s sharing headlines in press releases or getting to stand with the mayor during press conferences.”

Quinn’s Vito Veto

“Had Speaker Quinn not even entertained the suspicious map in the first place, she could have saved herself the embarrassment of a seeming quid pro quo arrangement with the odious Lopez. She didn’t, and now she’ll have to live with the consequences of having ‘done the right thing’ — only after being caught with her fingers in the redistricting jar.”

Tom Allon on Quinn

“This is not ineptitude or dishonesty due to lack of intelligence or know how. Instead, it is the result of a common pattern of cynicism. Christine Quinn puts her political ambitions ahead of the public good again and again and no one challenges her for this.”

Baldwin says Quinn has Blood on her Hands

“Baldwin…says that the Speaker is ‘a very nice person; but he thinks she is ‘untrustworthy.’ He also ‘resents’ that she is ‘Bloomberg’s hand-picked successor’ and notes that she has ‘blood on her hands’ after helping Bloomberg (and herself) get a third term.”
